Beyond the Waves: How Blue Dolphin Charters Gives Back to Kaua‘i’s People and Ocean

As the trade winds shift and the giving season arrives, gratitude feels especially deep here on Kaua’i. For Blue Dolphin Charters, that spirit of mahalo isn’t limited to one time of year- it’s part of how we do business every day. From ocean stewardship to local youth programs and environmental initiatives, Blue Dolphin’s mission extends far beyond our catamarans. It is a core belief that our success on the water is tied directly to the well-being of the island and the people who call it home.

A Legacy of Local Stewardship

For 30 years, Blue Dolphin Charters has made its home on the west side of Kaua’i, and has had the privilege of sailing and sharing the beauty of Nāpali Coast with visitors from around the world.

However, with that privilege comes responsibility. Our goal is to protect the ocean that sustains us and to invest in the community we are a part of.

Blue Dolphin proudly contributes to the Hawai‘i Ocean Stewardship Special Fund, a statewide initiative that supports coral reef restoration, marine research, and ocean conservation education. Every ticket sold helps fund long-term stewardship projects that keep Kaua’i’s reefs and marine ecosystems thriving for future generations.

“Operating on Kaua’i’s waters means taking care of them,” says the General Manager, Shaye Clarke.  “Our goal has always been to leave the ocean better than we found it,  and to teach others to do the same.”

Inspiring the Next Generation of Ocean Stewards

Blue Dolphin’s commitment to community starts early, with the youngest explorers. Through the Captain Keiki Program, kids are invited to learn about marine life, ocean safety, and the importance of conservation while experiencing the thrill of life at sea.

Each “Captain Keiki” receives a certificate of recognition, symbolizing not just a fun adventure but the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the ocean.

This program is especially meaningful for families who may not otherwise have access to these kinds of experiences. It’s a way for keiki to connect with the island’s marine heritage and to see firsthand how protecting the ocean protects their future.

Blue Dolphin also takes this same hands-on approach by participating in Career Day events for West Side schools on Kaua‘i—encouraging students to explore careers in ocean tourism, navigation, and marine stewardship.

Supporting Kaua‘i’s People, Partnerships, and Nonprofits

Beyond its ocean tours, Blue Dolphin Charters actively supports local schools, fundraising events, and nonprofit organizations across Kaua‘i—helping to strengthen the community that sustains us. From donating charter experiences for charity raffles to partnering with local programs, every effort is part of a larger ripple of aloha.

This holiday season, our crew took that spirit even further. In November, we hosted a Food Drive to support the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank, collecting donations to help local families prepare for Thanksgiving. In December, we’re proud to shift our efforts to a Toys for Tots collection—ensuring keiki across the island experience the joy of the season.

Each event strengthens the connection between our guests, our crew, and our island ‘ohana.

Partnerships & Conservation Efforts

Blue Dolphin’s efforts also extend to environmental partnerships that give back directly to the ocean that provides so much beauty and adventure. In addition to the Hawai‘i Ocean Stewardship Special Fund, we collaborate with local conservation groups such as the Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park, and we’re an annual sponsor of Nāpali Coast ‘Ohana, which helps maintain and restore sacred cultural and environmental sites along the coast.

This year, Blue Dolphin joined forces with Mālama Hulē‘ia to restore the historic Alakoko Fishpond, one of Kaua‘i’s most treasured ecosystems. Some staff brought their keiki (children) along and continue with volunteer maintenance efforts.

Through hands-on cleanups and community events, our team continues to advocate for the protection of beaches, reefs, and nearshore habitats—believing that every effort helps preserve these environments for generations to come.

When natural disasters or community crises arise, the Blue Dolphin crew is quick to lend a hand—donating supplies, volunteering time, and helping raise funds through island-wide relief efforts. It’s all part of what makes our 30-year legacy not just about tourism, but about active stewardship and aloha in action.

Leadership & Community Involvement

Our crew and leadership team don’t just represent Blue Dolphin, they actively serve as community leaders across Kaua‘i.

Our General Manager, Shaye Donnelly Clarke, serves as President of the Board of Directors for the Activities & Attractions Association of Hawai‘i (A3H) and as a member of the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau Board of Directors, helping promote responsible tourism and visitor education statewide.

Lori Barrett, our Marketing Manager, serves as a Director for Hō‘ike: Kaua‘i Community Media, is an active member of the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i, and is the Chairperson for the County of Kaua‘i Committee on the Status of Women, where she advocates for empowerment and equality island-wide.

Shaye Donnelly Clarke and Lori Barrett are both active in the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i and Zonta International, supporting educational opportunities for women and girls across the island.

Blue Dolphin Staff also participated in the October 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness sign-waving event led by the Kaua’i Committee on the Status of Women.

This spirit of community leadership underscores our belief that giving back isn’t only about donations, it’s about showing up in tangible ways, involvement & mentorship.

Gratitude in Action: Giving Back This Season

This Thanksgiving, Blue Dolphin Charters is taking a moment to reflect on what truly fuels our success: the island of Kaua’i itself. Every dolphin sighting, every sunset sail, every guest who steps aboard is part of a greater story: one of gratitude, responsibility, and aloha for the land and sea.

As the holiday season unfolds, Blue Dolphin encourages both visitors and locals to support Kaua’i’s small businesses, nonprofits, and conservation efforts. Whether through donations, volunteering, shopping locally & small for your holiday gift-giving, or simply making sustainable travel choices, every act of giving contributes to the island’s future.

Sailing Toward a Brighter Future

For Blue Dolphin Charters, giving back is not a seasonal tradition; it’s an everyday core value anchored in aloha. By supporting environmental causes, uplifting local families, participating in community organizations, and inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards, we work to ensure that the magic of the Nāpali Coast remains as vibrant tomorrow as it is today.

That’s why, when you sail with Blue Dolphin, you’re not just exploring Kaua’i, you’re helping protect it.

Book an adventure today, and become part of our legacy of Aloha, one that celebrates the ocean, supports local families, and helps preserve Kaua’i’s beauty for generations to come.
